Should My Friend Photograph My Wedding?

NO!!!!!!

Now, I really don't care who photographs your wedding, it's your wedding after all.

But I want to ask you this: do you want to flick through wonky, under/overexposed, unposed, purely awful photographs and try to remember what happened during your wedding day - a day that flies by at such break-neck speed?

I don't think you do. There's a lot of talk during these unescapable financial times, that people are choosing friends to photograph their wedding, over professional photographers who do unfortunately come with a price tag.

Yes, every person can go out and buy a digital camera and snap some pictures at your wedding. Its easy, that's why so many couples give out free disposable cameras for you to take photographs with. Do you know what happens to almost all of those photos that get taken on those little cameras - they are binned. That's because there is a difference between having the equipment, and being able to use it.

But Kieron, you are asking, isn't your reportage style of photography just the same as running around and snapping pictures? Well, that's how I might explain it to you, because yes I will be running around a lot and snapping a lot of pictures of people enjoying themselves. However, every shot is composed, I click the shutter at the right time to get the best shot, and I use a camera that I have trained myself with to get the best out of a given moment - because I am a hunter. I am hunting for the shot, hunting for the moment, hunting for those photographs that will spark your memory.

Do you know why else I will get you better photographs than any of your friends or family? Because that is what I am there to do - everyone else is interested in getting drunk. I'm not. After your wedding, I start working straight away on developing your pictures to get the most vibrant colours, most emotional black and whites, and I ensure only the highest quality in printing. I am a professional, and you will only receive the images that are worthy of having my name on them. Uncle Jeff isn't too bothered - he's quite happy he got everyone in the frame; it's just a shame that the bride wasn't smiling, the groom had his eyes shut and Bobby was picking his nose.

Just recently, I completed a job for a friend of mine, Brian. He had his wedding, and asked a friend to photograph it for him. In fact, that friend said he used to be a professional photographer. The day was done, the photographs were taken, and Brian was given the memory cards.

Woo, sorry Brian was given the memory cards and expected to print them himself? Yes that's right. It turns out, that friend wasn't a professional any more for a reason. That was when Brian came to me, and I finished off the work. I was able to offer Brian all of my services that I would have been able to supply after the wedding.

What made me so proud to be a professional photographer - and what is an important lesson for you to learn - is that when Brian was asked, 'did Kieron take those photos?' Brian replied: 'he should have done.'
